Il Visual kei (ヴィジュアル系, Bijuaru kei, "stile visuale"), è riferito ad un movimento all'interno del rock giapponese iniziato negli anni 80 e diventato molto popolare in Giappone dagli anni 90.
Caratteristica fondamentale del Visual kei è il look, band in cui l'aspetto visivo, la teatralità delle esibizioni e la celebrazione dell'artista hanno un ruolo centrale e non dispensabile. Importante è l'aspetto visivo e scenografico (costumi, scenografie, pose, trucco, comportamento), mentre musicalmente non c'è nessun genere caratterizzante, con sound che spaziano dall'heavy metal al pop rock senza trascurare molti generi come il grunge, il dark, l'hard rock, il glam, il punk e l'elettronica, e non sono inusuali i riferimenti alla musica classica.
L'androginia tipica di alcuni musicisti Visual kei trae le sue radici nella cultura giapponese: nel teatro Nō gli uomini recitano anche i ruoli femminili, costruendo dei canoni di bellezza virili che esaltavano la figura della donna come riferimento unico di bellezza anche per il sesso maschile.
Collegati al Visual kei, esistono altri stili: Oshare kei e Angura kei. L'Oshare kei, sottogenere del Visual kei nato verso il 2001, è caratterizzato da band allegre e luminose, dove il sound è influenzato dal pop-punk moderno e le loro canzoni sono incentrate sulla felicità e su messaggi positivi come amici e relazioni. Il loro stile è colorato e vivace, e raramente esagerano con il trucco. L'Angura kei, dall'inglese "underground", ha radici differenti dal Visual kei, comparso in Giappone verso il 1960. E' un movimento anti-occidentalizzazione, caratterizzato da uno stile più grottesco, e usa l'horror per tornare avvicinarsi alla tradizione giapponese, dato che il suo folclore è ricco di storie di fantasmi e mostri. |
